Using your member ID number

Your Aetna International member ID number is the same as your Nippon Life Benefits member ID number, but without letters. So if you're providing your Nippon member ID number during registration, claim submission or when calling member services — you only need to provide the numbers from your ID card. For example, with an ID number of "N12345678", you'd leave off the letter "N" and just use the numbers "12345678".

What to know about finding care

What to know about finding care

To find a provider outside the U.S., you can use the provider search tool on AetnaInternational.com. Or contact the Aetna International Member Services team 24/7, by calling 1-800-231-7729.

Aetna International has a broad global network of health care providers. You can save time and money when you see a direct-pay provider in our network. This means the doctor bills us directly for your care and you have less out-of-pocket costs at time of service.

If you choose to see a provider outside of our direct-pay network, you’ll need to pay for the service, then submit a claim to get reimbursed based on your benefits plan. Learn more below in the section submitting claims.

A highly-specialized clinical care management team can also help you find care and manage health conditions. Learn more about all the support and resources you have through our International Care  Management program in the section below.

In case of an emergency

  1. If you’re having a medical emergency, go directly to the nearest hospital
  2. Contact Aetna International using the number on the back of your Nippon Life Benefits ID card — or have someone else call for you
  3. Clinical care management experts will conduct a place of safety assessment and work with the treating doctor to determine if that facility can treat you, or if we need to arrange for an evacuation to the closest capable facility.

We’ll work closely with you and the facility to manage your care, the cost and everything in between.
